To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the "Lum and Abner" radio show in 2021=
, as well as the 10th anniversary of the "Lum and Abner" comic strip, we ar=
e presenting previous installments of the strip daily beginning January 1, =
2021. Monday-Saturday we will offer a "rerun" online. Some strips have not =
been available in several years. Both the visual strip and the audio adapta=
tion will be offered. Please visit this web address for the links:

"Walden Hughes recently wrote: I would like to get the word out that=20
Yesterday USA would like to host the OTR digest on it,s=C2=A0 server to k=

Charlie work [removed] We are in the process of building a=
 new web site."

There are two needs as I see it:

[removed] The archive.

[removed] A continuing email service for forwarding new messages.

While a single website that can manage both is ideal, the two can be=20
separate tasks.

In any internet presence where permanent archival is the goal we should=20
look for an alternative that precludes corporate ownership. I like=20
IBIBLIO which is owned by The University of North Carolina at Chapel=20
Hill Library. It is stable, free, backed up, and is promised to exist=20
far into the future.

Running a listserve is a job that requires a person such as Charlie to=20
manage and maintain. I doubt this can be done on IBIBLIO. Better I=20
believe to use a free service and setup a group with three or more=20
co-owners so management into the future is assured. Nothing worse than a =

single owner dies and nobody has authority to assume the post. Yahoo=20
Groups recently closed their service and offered recommendations for=20
email forwarding services as follows:

[begin quote]
Although we [Yahoo] don't have any official partnerships with any of the =

following groups' sites, we feel that the least we can do for our loyal=20
customers is to recommend some reliable sites for our users to continue=20
having group communications. These sites are simple and easy to use.

The site we recommend the most is Nextdoor, as it has a help page=20
advising how to switch your Yahoo Groups to their site!

Nextdoor - Use any email account to sign up
Facebook Groups - Requires a Facebook account
Google Groups - The admin of the group must have a Gmail account

Facebook Groups=C2=A0 --[removed]
Google Groups -- [removed]

IBIBLIO -- [removed]

Example of a webpage I prepared for Patrick Clancey who managed the=20
HyperWar Foundation site on IBIBLIO:

[removed]

Personally I value the OTR Digest archive more than the current group=20
email service.

After spending some time with the archives that were offered by others=20
in the group, which are very greatly appreciated, I can see where their=20
would be a great deal of work to get the archive into some form for easy =

access, beginning with getting the day by day releases in separate=20
files, creating a bullet-proof file naming system, and finding an=20
appropriate search engine that would not bog down a server reading all=20
the text files. Searching may be entirely impossible using our own=20
engine. Better to let the web search engines dig through the vast files=20
and get them indexed on Google and other search engines at their=20
expense. Then a search can always be accomplished by use of a site=20
search operator such as:

 =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 "shenbarger [removed]"

which returns the two pages I prepared for Hyperwar and nothing else. We =

could have a home page with instructions on how to accomplish this and=20
other limited information about the history of OTR Digest under it's=20
previous owners.

This method of searching works on a conventional hosting service we=20
would have to rent as well as on IBIBLIO or other large file bucket and=20
frees our web guru to be named later from maintaining a private search=20
engine and dealing with a hosting service complaints about overloads, etc=
=2E

Last thoughts:

[removed] Charlie was always protective of our privacy. I consider that=20
admirable. Our archive includes the email address of every poster, free=20
to be mined from a public resource such as we are considering. I believe =

we need to think about that. Some first thoughts:

=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] I use a [removed] file to inhibit all privat=
e webpages from=20
being added to search engines.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] It could suffice to provide the archive as i=
t exists for people=20
to use and lock out searching to find it.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] We could password protect the archive using =
a PHP password page=20
which is reasonably secure.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] But somebody would need to be responsible fo=
r giving newcomers=20
the password.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] Any password would probably find its way in =
the public sector.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] I do not know of a law requiring search engi=
nes to adhere to=20
the [removed] file commands.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] We could delete the email addresses from the=
 entire [removed]
(BEST IDEA if we provide public access)
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 [removed] g. is not easy.

[removed] We cannot possibly get permission to publish the email addresses=
 of=20
all posters.

[removed] I do so hope there is some reasonable way to preserve the many=20
wonderful stories told by persons who lived the radio drama era.

[removed] I would like to hear Mr. Ross' thoughts about publishing email=20
addresses.
